BSISD to ponder oil lease

September 12, 2012

In a very roundabout way, Big Spring Independent School District may be getting into the oil business.

BSISD trustees will discuss the possibility of leasing district land for oil exploration purposes when they hold their regular monthly meeting at 5:15 p.m. Thursday in the high school board room.

Business Manager Debbie Green said representatives of an oil company approached the school district with the intent to drill for oil on BSISD property near Knott.

“We have about four acres of property close to Knott,” Green said. “In 1986, we had some oil exploration out there … and a company has recently approached us about doing so again.”

Thursday, trustees will consider approving a resolution to lease the property. If the resolution is approved, the district will then solicit bids before finally approving any lease agreement later this year, Green said.

Discussion on the lease resolution will highlight an otherwise routine board meeting. Other agenda items include:

• An adjunct faculty agreement with the Howard County Extension Office.
• Personnel matters.
• Enrollment report.
• Delinquent tax collection report.
