BSISD spellers regional bee bound

February 19, 2013

Five Big Spring Independent School District students are hoping to spell their way to Washington D.C.

The five spellers will represent their campuses and BSISD when they participate in the Scripps-Howard Regional Spelling Bee, scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday on the Midland College campus.

The students qualified for Saturday's event by winning spelling contests at their respective campuses, said Robin Ritchey, BSISD spelling bee coordinator.

The five campus winners are:

• Big Spring Junior High School seventh-grader Rachel McCalister, daughter of Sharon Carter and Carnel Carter, whose winning words were “opulent” and “implicit.”

• Marcy Elementary's Daniel Roberts, the son of Mike and Jenifer Roberts. His winning word was “flirtatious.”

• Goliad Elementary fifth-grader Marli Norman, the daughter of Amy Briseno.

• Washington Elementary fourth-grader Mikayla Paredez, the daughter of Jerry and Marlina Paredez.

• Moss Elementary fifth-grader Anthony Sarmiento, the son of Tony and Jennifer Sarmiento. His winning word was “convention.”

The winner of Saturday's regional event advances to the Scripps-Howard National Spelling Bee, to be held later this year in Washington, D.C.
