BSISD struggling to employ enough teachers

August 16, 2013

When it comes to hiring teachers, it's definitely a seller's market.

Big Spring Independent School District officials are still looking for teachers to fill some classroom slots as the new school year approaches.

Some BSISD classes will start the school year with part-time or temporary instructors, Director of Curriculum and Instruction Ann McClarty told trustees during their Thursday meeting.

“We still have three positions at the elementary level to be filled (one each at Moss, Marcy and Washington), four at the junior high and two vocational positions at the high school,” McClarty said.

There are a variety of reasons why Big Spring is is still feeling the hiring pinch this close to the start of school. For starters, several school districts in this area are in the same position, so competition is especially fierce for new hires.

Another contributing factor is the community's housing shortage.

“I've had a couple of new hires back out simply because they couldn't afford the housing in this area,” McClarty said.

To plug the gaps in the classroom, the district will employ “long-term substitutes,” a term that is somewhat misleading, she said.

“Most of those are people who still need to complete a course or two to receive their (teaching) certification,” McClarty said. “Until they do, they'll be classified as as substitutes.”

Regardless, McClarty said all teaching positions will be manned when school bells ring later this month.

“We will have teachers in the classroom on Aug. 26,” she said.
