Bulldogettes stave off Post in thriller, 46-45

COAHOMA — In a game like this, a nine-point deficit looked like it was too far out of reach for the Coahoma Bulldogettes heading into the fourth quarter.

But they didn’t want to go 0-2 in district play. The fear of that happening alone sparked Coahoma in a thrilling 46-45 win over Post in District 3-2A action Tuesday in Coahoma.

The Bulldogettes were down 39-30 heading into the fourth quarter, but battled back to tie it thanks to a few baskets from Minnie Goodblanket and a clutch shot from Haley Pace with about a minute left in the game.
A late foul and free throws from Goodblanket after Pace’s shot gave Coahoma its only lead of the second half as the Bulldogettes staved off Post for their first district win of the year.

“Our hearts were in this game,” said Goodblanket, who had nine points. “We wanted it. We definitely wanted it.”

Lynzi Ferrell and Pace had 12 points a piece to lead Coahoma, while Jennifer Castilaw, who was in foul trouble early, had 11. Haily Berry scored 14 point for Post. Macy Blair, Skyler Jones and Amber Wilson had 10 apiece.

Post and Coahoma spent the first half and most of the third quarter trading punches until the Bulldogettes went cold. A 9-0 run coupled with three Coahoma turnovers to end the third left the Bulldogettes searching for answers heading into the fourth.

“I told them in the fourth quarter ‘Who wants it? If you don’t want it, then it’s not going to happen,’” head coach Mitzi Bell said. “They started telling each other, ‘We want it, we want it.’ They proved here that they wanted it.”
Down 42-34 in the middle of the fourth, Goodblanket’s three-point play and a basket immediately following that trumped a scoreless stretch for the Lady Antelopes.

A steal from Castilaw led to another Coahoma score to make it 42-41 and Pace’s shot gave the Bulldogettes a chance to win the game.

“We played tip to buzzer,” Pace said. “Hard defense, hard offense and our shots were on. ... We have to play hard. That’s all we can do.”

Up 44-43 after Goodblanket’s free throw, it looked like momentum was about to take a big swing when Post got a steal, but the Bulldogettes immediately got the points back with a steal of their own and Post had to foul. Lyni Ferrel hit her free throws and Coahoma walked away victorious.

Cutting down the turnovers was key for Coahoma. The Bulldogettes had 16 total turnovers and 11 of them came in the first half.
