Cancer survivors sought for Relay

April 18, 2011

Survivors wanted! That’s the word from the Howard/Glasscock Relay For Life tri-chairwomen of the Survivor Committee, which lists and provides for anyone who has had cancer.

“After all, this is about the people who have survived cancer and are celebrating more birthdays,” affirmed Bonnie Miller, Koila Strickland, and Debbye ValVerde.

“We sent out a mailing that incorrectly stated the deadline to register to get a purple shirt, “ said Strickland, “but the fact is we will take survivors’ names even at the Relay.”

Choate Well Service, which has provided the distinctive purple T-shirts for several years, makes sure that there are enough survivor shirts for everyone who signs up. Calling any of the three chairpersons before Relay will assure that your name is on the survivor list. The numbers to call are Miller: 398-5434, Strickland: 816-6595, or ValVerde: 815-1109. Relay is set for May 6-7 at Blankenship Field in Big Spring.

In addition to getting a T-shirt for the Survivor Lap, the honorees are given a reception following the lap (whether they are able to make the entire lap or not) and a meal ticket at one of the food booths.
