Candidate debate: Who will show?

April 13, 2011

As Thursday's debate for candidates vying for the District 1 and District 3 seats on the Big Spring City Council nears, organizers with the political event say it's still unclear which political hopefuls will be participating.

District 1 Councilwoman Stephanie Horton is set to defend her seat on the council from challenger Marcus Fernandez in the May 14 municipal elections, while the race for the District 3 seat has drawn three challengers, as incumbent Councilwoman Joann Staulcup will attempt to beat out challengers Shannon Thomason, Glenn Carrigan and write-in candidate Oscar Velasco.

According to debate coordinator Dana Baker, it's currently unclear if Horton will be participating in the debate, while challenger Fernandez has not committed either, saying he will “try to make it.”
