Candidates speak out during debate
Despite drawing only three candidates, Thursday night's debate for city council hopefuls managed to heat up the races for the District 1 and District 3 seats on the government panel, with attention turning to term limits, the tax rate and municipal spending.
District 3 candidates Shannon Thomason and Glen Carrigan — along with a last minute-statement from write-in candidate Oscar Velasco — joined District 1 hopeful Marcus Fernandez to take part in the debate, which was fueled by questions submitted by e-mail and mail.
District 3 incumbent Joann Staulcup said she was unable to attend the debate because she would be out of town, while District 1 incumbent Stephanie Horton said she could not attend due to surgery.
However, during the debate several audience members, including Mayor Tommy Duncan, told those in attendance the surgery was scheduled for Monday.
Questions presented at the debate covered a wide variety of topics, including which city projects the candidates felt were being under- and over-funded.
