CFOT effort hits high gear

October 11, 2011

Everyone enjoys receiving a gift at Christmas, especially those fighting for our country.

Christmas for OUR Troops — a program started in 2004 — is aimed at making sure troops receive packages during the Christmas season.

Debbie Burrow, Big Spring area coordinator for Christmas for OUR Troops, said the goal for this year is 2,500 boxes. In 2004, five boxes were packaged and shipped after Scott Davis and USAF Captain Steven Givler became friends and sprouted the idea.

“The program works off of donated items, which are then packed and mailed out to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan,” Burrow said.

In order to fill the 2,500 boxes, community support is needed, in more ways than one. Burrow said the first thing the community is asked to do is submit the names and APO addresses of any military personnel who will be deployed during this year's Christmas season. Secondly, the community is asked to donate the items needed to fill these packages, along with spreading the word.
