Chamber banquet details set

January 9, 2013

Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce has set the time, place and date for its annual banquet and as a result, has extended the deadline for Man and Woman of the Year nominations.

First things first. The banquet will begin at 7 p.m. Jan. 31 on the Sonic Floor at Dorothy Garrett Coliseum. Tickets are $25 per person, with a reservation deadline of Jan. 25.

Masters of ceremony will be Jan Hendricks and Tatum Hubbard with CBS 7 News. Providing entertainment will be Eddie Vandewalker and the Howard College Music Department. Great Western Dining will cater the meal.

Highlighting the banquet is the announcement of Man and Woman of the Year. Nominations for the awards have been extended until 5 p.m. Monday.
For those unfamiliar with the rules, nominations must be submitted by a chamber member, but a nominee does not have to be a member of the chamber.

“There are many people who do extraordinary things with their business or place of employment and we commend those performers, but we want to recognize those people who go above and beyond day in and day out and strive continuously to improve the community they live in,” said Debbye ValVerde, Chamber executive director. “We want those people to know their work is not in vain and someone has noticed just what they have been doing.”

Any area resident who has shown an all-around contribution to the community and has a consistent track record of doing so is eligible.

There are a few exceptions, however. Anyone holding a political office should not be nominated. Nominees should be residents in the area served by the Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce. Nominations should include all relevant information that might be considered in the selection process.

“We don’t want to make this a popularity contest and in order to do that judges will only take into consideration the information provided in the nomination and not refer to any personal knowledge of one’s background,” ValVerde said.

Nomination forms can be picked up at the chamber office, located at 215 W. Third. Forms can be mailed to 215 W. Third or P.O. Box 1391, Big Spring, Texas. For more information or to request a nomination form, call the chamber at 432-263-7641.
Sponsors for this year's banquet include Alon USA, GEO Group, Oncor, State National Bank, Wal-Mart, Water, Water and Wells Fargo Bank.

The banquet theme is Moving Forward with Every Step and the activities will include passing of the gavel from Jan Foresyth to Jim Clements.
