Chamber board promotes positive focus

August 18, 2011

Positive thinking was the focus of the August Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce board meeting, held Wednesday.
“We need to start overcoming the negative thinking and we can start by focusing on the positives,” Terri Johansen, chamber president, said. “With all going on in the world it's easy to focus on the negative, especially with the lack of rain and school finances.”
Debbye ValVerde, chamber executive director, delivered the financial report which showed a large profit from the carnival held in June.
“The profits were more than we expected and we have told them to put us on the list for next year,” ValVerde said.
Membership dues are sitting at $3,600 received, but according to Sherri Key, membership coordinator of the chamber, membership is down. The chamber has 342 members and is actively searching for new ones.
“We need to work hard on bringing in membership,” ValVerde said. “We are doing a lot to try and help local businesses, but we need to get the word out to them and bring them in as members.”
Three new members were added — Howard County Health Center, My Favorite Place and Barb's Boutique — and will be having ribbon cuttings within the next week. Christy's and Howard College also have ribbon cuttings lined up for the month of September.
“September 30 we will be celebrating our 65th anniversary. It's hard to believe we had our first class 65 years ago,” said Jan Forsyth, Howard College director of institutional advancement.
Not only will the college celebrate its 65th year in the community, but it will also be celebrating the end of the bond project construction and dedicating two buildings.
In keeping with the positive thinking and showing appreciation, the Firefighter Benefit — Auction and Dance is scheduled for Aug. 27 at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum. The goal has been set at $100,000 in order to purchase a new fire truck for the volunteer department.
