Charles D. Herring, Jr., 96, of Big Spring, died Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, at his residence. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013, at the Mt. Olive Memorial Park Chapel with the Rev. Bill Ivins, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating.
He was born Oct. 8, 1917, in Big Spring, Texas and married Mozelle James July 5, 1941, in Big Spring, Texas.
Charles was a lifelong resident of Big Spring and graduated from Big Spring High School in 1934. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II and worked for Cosden Refinery for 42 years, retiring as a shift forman.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church and was also a member of Staked Plains Lodge #598 A.F. & A.M. and the Scottish Rite.
Survivors include his wife, Mozelle Herring of Big Spring; a grandson, Brian Mathiews of Tampa, Fla.; and nephew, Mike Turner of Colorado Springs, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles D. and Della Dean Herring; one son, Charles Anthony "Tony" Herring; a brother, William Herring; two sisters, Mildred Turner and Irene "Tommie" Herring; and a granddaughter, Toynette Herring.
The family suggests memorials be made to Methodist Children's Home, 1111 Herring Ave., Waco, Texas 76708.
