Charles William 'Smitty' Smith

Charles William "Smitty" Smith, 65, of Midland died Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at his residence. Graveside funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m., Friday, April 4, 2014, at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. The Family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home in Big Spring.
Charles was born Dec. 23, 1948, in Deport, Texas, and joined the United States Marine Corps right out of high school. He made a career of the military. After his service in the Marines, he began serving in the United States Army National Guard. He has been involved in every conflict from Vietnam to the Iraqi War and was a Purple Heart recipient. He retired from military service 2006.
Survivors include two daughters, Denise Smith and husband Robert of Big Spring, and Linda Dianne Box of Midland; six grandchildren, Stormi Smith, Reba Smith, Nicole Wilcox and husband Terry, Chesnei Smith, Katie Duncan and husband Brad, and Alyssa Box; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Yvonne Bertrand and husband Allen of Odessa; sister-in-law, Donna Smith Rosales of Indio, Calif.; and nine nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Kathrine (Black) Smith and one brother, Elbert Neal Smith.
