Christmas For Our Troops deadline nearing

November 15, 2010

Area residents hoping to spread a little Christmas cheer to U.S. military service personnel serving overseas have a little more than two weeks left to donate to Christmas For Our Troops Inc.

Debbie Burrow, local director for the drive, said local response has been good to date and that volunteers will be soliciting gifts and monetary donations through Dec. 1.

The inspiration for the drive is simple, she said — the desire to let troops serving in combat zones that the folks back home haven't forgotten them.

“A major part of it is just to let them know we're thinking about them,” Burrow said.

The drive is the brainchild of Midlander Scott Davis, who remains overall coordinator of the effort. From modest beginnings — the drive sent four boxes of gifts overseas in 2004 — response has grown dramatically.

Burrow said almost 2,000 were shipped to troops in 2009 and organizers are hoping for bigger and better things this year.

“This year, we hope to send 2,500 boxes to our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq,” Burrow added.

There are more than 120 drop-off points across West Texas and eastern New Mexico.
