Ever wonder what it's like to be far from home and away from family and friends during the holidays? That's something military personnel serving in Iraq and Afghanistan will know all too well this year.
So the Christmas for our Troops Inc. gift drive, currently ongoing in Big Spring and other West Texas communities, is designed to send our military personnel a little bit of home for the holidays.
Debbie Burrow, local director for the drive, said the inspiration for the drive is simple — to let troops serving in combat zones that the folks back home haven't forgotten them.
“A major part of it is just to let them know we're thinking about them,” Burrow said.
Now in the sixth year for the drive, Burrow says they hope to send 2,500 boxes to troops this year. CFOT requests that individuals limit their donations to items that can be easily packed and shipped in 12-inch-by-12-inch-by-5.5-inch boxes. The size and quantity of each item should be appropriate for one individual to use or consume.
Among the requested donation items are:
• Over the counter medication such as Tylenol, Pepcid, Claritin, antibacterial ointment and soap, cough drops and eye drops.
• Toiletries such as deodorant, Kleenex, toothpaste and toothbrushes and Band-Aids.
• Food and powdered drink items, including cocoa, powdered Gatorade and lemonade, trail mix, sunflower seeds, nuts, beef jerky and Ramen noodles.
• Necessities and fun items such as socks, batteries, DVDs and CDs, magazines and paperbacks, Christmas cards, knit gloves and caps, toys and Hoppe's No. 9 gun solvent.
Cash donations will be accepted also.
Drop off items or cash donations at Hardison Appliance Service, Harris Lumber, Wells Fargo Bank, State National Bank, Walmart, Sears, St. Paul Lutheran Church, Bowlarama, Alive in Christ Lutheran church, First United Methodist Church, First Christian Church and Mr. Scrubs Oil Change.

We encourage our readers to take part in this worthwhile project. There's no doubt in our minds that if any of us was serving over there, we'd be looking forward to a little bit of home coming our way at Christmas.View more articles in:
