COAHOMA â€” School trustees here approved the calendar and teacher contracts for the 2012-2013 school year during their monthly meeting Thursday night.
The coming school year at Coahoma will begin Aug. 27 and conclude May 30, 2013, and includes the following student holidays:
â€˘ Sept. 3 â€” Labor Day holiday.
â€˘ Oct. 8 â€” Staff development (student holiday).
â€˘ Nov. 21-22 â€” Thanksgiving holiday.
â€˘ Nov. 26 â€” Staff development (student holiday).
â€˘ Dec. 20-Jan. 2, 2013 â€” Christmas holiday.
â€˘ March 11-15, 2013 â€” Spring break.
â€˘ May 24, 2013 â€” Bad weather make-up day.
â€˘ May 27, 2013 â€” Memorial Day holiday.
â€˘ May 30, 2013 â€” Last day of instruction.
â€˘ May 31, 2013 â€” Bad weather make-up day.
The new school year will have 175 instruction days, including 36 days set aside for state standardized testing, CISD officials said.
In addition, trustees approved renewing the contracts of 53 CISD teachers for the coming school year. Administration Secretary Judy Dobbs said three teachers have submitted their resignations, while one is retiring.
In non-action items, school officials reported that enrollment at the three campuses changed only slightly between January and February.
At the end of February, elementary enrollment was at 444, up two students from January, junior high enrollment stood at 135, down one student, and high school enrollment was 215, down two students from January.
Total enrollment stands at 794, down one student from January.
School officials also reported that the average daily attendance through the fourth six-week period was 759, compared to last yearâ€™s final ADA of 734. The in-district transfer number stands at 158, up three students.
The filing period for the May 12 school trustee election ended March 5. Six candidates filed for three positions on the board â€” incumbents Brian Moore, Jody Reid and Alan Wright, along with Leslie Tindol, Gerald King and Paul Lewis.
April 12 is the deadline for registering to vote in the trustee election.
School officials reported that the track resurfacing and roof replacement projects are proceeding on schedule and should be completed within the week.
The next board meeting is scheduled for April 16.
