CISD trustees approve budget

COAHOMA — Coahoma Independent School District trustees gave their stamp of approval to a new budget and tax rate for the coming fiscal year during their monthly meeting Tuesday evening.

The $7.4 million budget does feature a built-in shortfall of slightly more than $200,000, a result of a $500,000 reduction in state revenue this fiscal year.

However, Interim Superintendent Gary Harrell said the fiscal situation could have been much worse for the district. CISD cut expenses in several areas, including instituting a freeze on salaries, to help make up the shortfall.

“The district started making cuts last spring when it became apparent that the state would be cutting the revenue it sends to schools,” Harrell said. “As a result of those cuts, instead of a shortfall of $500,000, it will be $200,000.”
