City gives green light to redistricting plan

Members of the Big Spring City Council approved a resolution adopting new redistricting boundaries for its six districts on a unanimous vote Tuesday, giving the go-ahead to send the plan to the U.S. Department of Justice.

The plan — one of four the council had to choose from — decreases the amount of deviation allowed by the Voting Rights Act from the current 25.28 percent to 4.4 percent, bringing the district plan to well below the 10 percent maximum established by federal law.

According to attorney Robert T. Bass, who met with the council Tuesday evening to discuss the proposed redistricting plans, Proposed Plan 4 was the most prudent choice.
