Clarence D. Hays, 82, of St. Pete, Fla., formerly of Big Spring passed away Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, at his residence after a two-year battle with lung cancer.
He was born July 16, 1931, in Mitchell County, Texas, to Tennie and W.D. Hays. Clarence was a member of United Methodist Church in Coahoma. He graduated from Coahoma High School in 1948. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and retired July 31, 1971. While serving our country, he received three commendation medals.
He is survived by his wife, Mackie Brooks Hays; one son, Don Hays and wife Jeanie of Mt. Pleasant, Tenn.; daughter, Cathy Savage and husband Danny of Gautier, Miss.; daughter, Jeanne Nicklash and husband Mike of St. Pete, Fla.; brothers, Marion Hays and wife Charline of Westbrook, Texas, and Bill Hays and wife Judy of White Oak, Texas; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Belva and Curtis Hebert of San Angelo, Texas; grandchildren, Michele Ward, Jackie Butler and husband Charley, Melinda Tyson and husband Robert, Danny and Derek Savage, John Hays and wife LeeAnn and Nicole Niklasch; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Russell Wayne Hays and Ronnie Hays; a granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn Hays; in-laws, Ruby and Jimmy Brooks; and one brother and sister-in-law, Dois and Jane Hays.
Clarence was truly a great man, loved by everyone and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A celebration of life will be held in Big Spring, Texas, on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013.
