Coahoma attempts to erase recent playoff woes

November 12, 2010

Hunter Williams catches a pass in the Bulldogs' game against Comanche earlier this season. Coahoma faces Spearman at 8 p.m. today in Plainview.

COAHOMA — Coahoma head coach Trey Gardner describes playoff time like some children describe their favorite holiday.

After all, he has said making it to the playoffs is like Christmas coming early for him.

But the Bulldogs are hoping the joy doesn’t end so soon when they take on Spearman in bi-district playoff action at 8 p.m. today in Plainview.
Coahoma’s last appearance in the playoffs was in 2007, but their last win was in 2003.

“It’s kind of an oddity,” Gardner said. “Somebody was asking me about the playoffs, well it’s been a long time since I haven’t been in the playoffs. For our kids, that’s a different story. That’s one of the things that concerns me the most. You never know exactly how you’re kids are going to react.

“I don’t want to have the Minnie Pearl syndrome. I know a lot of people don’t know who that is, Minnie Pearl sang, “we’re just happy to be here.” I don’t want to be just happy to be here.”

The Bulldogs have a chance to do something they haven’t in a seven years with a playoff win tonight, but to do it, they’ll have to go against a Spearman team that attacks defenses in many different ways.

Coahoma defensive coordinator Raul Sanchez said Spearman’s multiple formations on offense allows the Lynx to adjust if needed.
Spearman’s ability to choose from many formations will keep Coahoma on its toes.

“They run between 35 and 45 formations,” Sanchez said. “It’s just kind of whatever is working for them, they’re going to likely try to get into. I’m anxious to see what they’re going to try to do against us.”

Coahoma may have to throw the ball more than usual, too.
