COAHOMA — The Coahoma City Council is taking a “slow and steady” approach to adopting the first-ever zoning maps for this community.
The council tabled plans to vote on adopting the maps during its Thursday meeting, giving city officials more opportunities to fine-tune the proposal and address concerns raised by residents during a series of public meetings on the subject.
The zoning map push has been a topic of much debate in the community for more than six months, ever since city officials decided the action was needed to help attract more business and revenue to their community.
“It came out of a comprehensive plan we did in order to encourage growth,” Coahoma Mayor Warren Wallace said. “By establishing zones, it will be easier for the city to obtain grants and recruit new businesses … plus, people would know what can or can't go in a certain place.”
The plan, crafted by Cameron Walker, planning director for the city of Midland, would establish three types of dedicated residential zones in Coahoma, as well as designated areas for commercial, industrial and agricultural use.
However, several objections have been raised to the plan, especially from residents whose property might be found in violation of the new ordinances.
