Coahoma enters playoffs

November 10, 2011

After last week's 40-6 loss at the hands of district champion Idalou, the Coahoma Bulldogs are ready to get back on the field. The Dogs will travel to Plainview Friday night for a 7:30 p.m. clash with Spearman.
The 8-2 Spearman Lynx finished the regular season in third place in their district behind Sanford-Fritch and Abernathy.

The Lynx are pretty straight forward when it comes to offensive style. They have a lot of big boys on the team and they love to run the ball. According to Coahoma Head Coach Trey Gardner, the Lynx will line up foot-to-foot and try to just run over their opponents.

“They have a lot of size,” Coach Gardner said. “Somehow, we have to be able to stop their big running backs.”

Coach Gardner and his team of Bulldogs are faced with a familiar challenge this week, trying to match size with speed. It has been rare for Coahoma to face a team this season who is their own size, but at the same time, few can run with tanner Ruiz and Justin Coker.

“We feel we have a slight advantage when it comes to speed,” Coach Gardner said. “If we can get our (running) backs to the outside, out on the edge, we believe we have a legitimate shot of winning this ball game and moving on to the next level.”

Last week, Coahoma fell to Idalou in a game which decided the district title. But Gardner says the loss has done nothing to diminish the spirits of the Bulldogs.

“It was a great tune-up game for us,”Coach Gardner said. “We still feel there is no one we will face as tough as Idalou. It got us ready for playoff-caliber teams like Spearman. We are looking forward to making the most of what we have learned.”

Going into the game, Coahoma appears to be about as healthy as a team can be at this stage of the season. Coach Gardner said they had some bumps and dings, but overall, he was happy with the shape they were in and planned to suit up everyone for the game Friday night.

“It should be a great playoff game,” he added.
