COAHOMA â Student safety and school security will be the main topics of discussion when Coahoma Independent School District trustees hold their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday in the administration building board room.
In the wake of the Newtown, Conn., School shootings which claimed 20 first-graders and six educators last month, student safety has become of prime concern for both parents and education professionals.
âI've said it before: Our job is to educate our students, but our No. 1 goal is to ensure their safety,â CISD Superintendent Amy Jacobs said.
Jacobs said administrators and trustees will discuss several aspects of the district's safety plan and possible ways to improve procedures.
âWe'll just be making sure everyone has the information they need and we are meeting the needs of our students and teachers,â she said.
Jacobs said âalmost every topic under the sunâ in regards to school safety will be considered by the district, including hot-button subjects like arming school personnel, although she sees major problems with taking that step.
âI feel like teachers and educators have so much on their plates as far as doing their jobs, and now we're talking about them being an armed servant â and the two don't go hand-in-hand,â she said. âHopefully, we can come up with a different alternative.â
CISD also is open to the idea of increased law enforcement presence around campuses, she added, although no definite steps have been taken in that direction.
Jacobs said the district is open to just about any constructive idea when it comes to the safety of students and teachers.
âI think you need to look at everything and decide what serves your students' safety the best,â she said. âOur school district is doing everything in its power to ensure the safety of its campuses.â
In other business Thursday, trustees will consider:
⢠Superintendent evaluation and other personnel matters.
⢠A public hearing on the district's Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS) report.
⢠A change in adult meal prices in school cafeterias.
