Howard College officials will take the first step toward finding a new trustee when a search committee meets Wednesday.
The three-person committee, comprised of trustees John Freeman, Marie Etheridge and Murray Murphy, will meet at noon in the student union building's Tumbleweed Room to begin the process of replacing District 3 Trustee Larry McLellan, who resigned earlier this month after he was elected Big Spring mayor.
No action will be taken at Wednesday's meeting. A timetable has not been set for naming a replacement, but College President Dr. Cheryl Sparks expects the committee will move “expeditiously” in finding a new trustee.
McLellan was appointed to the college board following the death of longtime District 3 Trustee Harold Davis in 2008 and was elected in his own right in 2010.
Whoever is appointed to the board will serve until the next trustee election in May 2014, at which time they can run for the remainder of McLellan's term, which runs until 2016.
District 3 roughly covers the southwest portion of Howard County. Potential replacements must be 18 years of age or older and be a resident of District 3 as well as a U.S. and Texas citizen.
