Colunga, Chudej named district's MVP

Josh Colunga was one of the main players in Garden City's state championship run this season.

The Garden City Bearkats were led by Josh Coulnga and Brett Chudej all season during their run to a second consecutive state championship.

So, it seems right the two swept the district's Offensive and Defensive MVP awards.

With the Six-Man Division I District 7 football honors being released, Coulnga was named Offensive MVP and Chudej, who regularly made plays at linebacker, was named the district's Defensive MVP.

The Bearkats had 13 players earn honors. Chudej, Reggie Halfmann, Ruben Mier and Brian Hirt earned multiple honors.

Ian Schaefer nabbed a first team selection at tight end. Joining him on first team offense was Chudej at wideout, Aaron Long at center, Blayne Batla at quarterback and Brian Hirt at utility back. Chudej earned a first team selection at kicker, too.

For first team defense, the Bearkats were represented by Ruben Mier at nose guard, Austin Odom, Reggie Halfmann at linebacker and Hirt at cornerback.

For second team offense, the Bearkats had tight end Jonathan Young,Mier at fullback and Halfmann at utility back.

Defensive lineman Colton Belew, linebacker Peyton Schaefer, cornerback Frankie Zuniga made the district's second team defense. Halfmann earned a second team selection at punter.

Head coach Vance Jones was named Coach of the Year after leading his team to an undefeated season and another state title.

The Bearkats ended the season with on a 29-game winning streak, ending it with a win over Throckmorton in the state final in Abilene.
