Commissioners agree to land sale

June 25, 2013

Howard County commissioners gave the go-ahead to sell a county-owned tract of land on the north side of Big Spring during their Monday meeting, a prospect that could have a new hotel going up in the area.

The tract of land — a half-block near the county's Road and Bridge Administration office in the north part of the city — has been the focus of attention several times in the past several months, as real estate developers have approached the court about purchasing and developing the property.

Commissioners gave the go-ahead to sell the property for slightly more than $151,000 during Monday morning's meeting, part of a bid submitted by a Big Spring business owner.

County Judge Mark Barr said the benefits of selling the parcel of land are two-fold.

“First and foremost, it gets the property back on the tax rolls. That's certainly the most important aspect of this for the commissioners court,” Barr said. “Also, it will help bring funds into the county's general fund, which will give us more to work with when it comes time to set the budget for the coming year.

“There is so much going on right now — much-needed maintenance for county roads, the deal with the city regarding the landfill and other items — that every penny counts. This could be a bit of a boost for us.”
