Howard County commissioners will hold a special meeting Friday morning to canvass the results of the Nov. 2 general election, a contest that will provide a pair of new faces to the court in 2011.

Slated for 8:30 a.m. in the commissioners courtroom — located on the third floor of the Howard County Courthouse — commissioners are expected to sign off on the results.

The race for the Precinct 2 seat on the commissioners court was won by Republican Donnie Baker, bringing in 1,813 ballots — a whopping 77.05 percent of the vote — while Democratic challenger Jim Sinclair garnered only 540 ballots for 22.95 percent of the vote.

According to Baker, the most urgent issue facing the court in the coming term will be decreasing the tax rate. He was one of many candidates running on a conservative political platform this year.
