Constance Charline (Trent) Pope

Constance Charline (Trent) Pope of Goldthwaite, Texas, passed into the hands of the Lord on March 10, 2013. She was 92 years of age.

Connie was born June 3, 1920, in El Paso, Texas, to Howard Bryan and Charline (Burks) Trent. Connie graduated Goldthwaite High in 1937, then attended Hockaday in Dallas, from which she graduated in 1939. Following that, she attended SMU, graduating with a double major in music and Spanish in 1941.

She worked at the Douglas airplane factory during the first years of World War II. In November of 1942, she boarded a train in Los Angeles, Calif., and rode it to New York City to meet and marry Raymond Pope, whom she had met while they were both at SMU. Afterwards, they went to Princeton, N.J., where Pope was in officers school for the U.S. Navy.

The years following the war saw them living in various Texas towns where Pope was a football coach and teacher and Connie was a teacher, homemaker and mother. One of these town was Big Spring, Texas, where Pope was the dean of students at the high school from 1964 until 1977. Connie was an elementary school teacher.

Connie and Pope returned to Goldthwaite in 1976, after retirement from the high school in Big Spring. Connie was a lifelong Methodist. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister; and her husband of 54 years, Raymond, who passed away in Goldthwaite in 1996.

Connie is survived by her three children and their families, Raymond E. Pope of Goldthwaite, Dale and Constance Anne (Pope) Ming of Goldthwaite and Mike and Sue Pope of Los Alamos, N.M. Connie had six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Goldthwaite Methodist Church on March 13, 2013, at 10 a.m. with burial at the Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are to be handled by Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home. The family requests memorials be made to the Jennie Trent Dew Library, the National Audubon Society, or any Methodist Church Youth Program.
