Contreras gets probated term for tot’s injuries

A Big Spring man found guilty on a charge of injury to a child during a late-September bench trial was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 10 years probation in 118th District Court Wednesday morning.

Joseph Contreras, 21, was found guilty of injury to a child during a Sept. 28 bench trial — a trial where the decision is made by the judge without the benefit of a jury — in connection with injuries sustained by a two-year-old in early December.

Contreras was arrested at a relative’s home in the 1600 block of Virginia after officials with the SMMC emergency room became suspicious of the child’s injuries — which included a broken leg — and called law enforcement officers.
