Council again rejects appraisal district budget

The Big Spring City Council gave the Howard County Appraisal District's proposed 2011-2012 budget a stamp of disapproval for the second time Tuesday night, once again citing a salary increase for Chief Appraiser Brett McKibben as the reason.

The council voted 6-1 in favor of disapproving the budget, a move made necessary by state law, according to City Finance Director Peggy Walker.

“At the last meeting the council disapproved the appraisal district's (proposed) budget based on a substantial increase in salary for one individual,” Walker told the council. “The Texas Tax Code requires that you disapprove a budget by resolution, so this will have to go through two readings. Then we will submit it to the appraisal district, which has to receive it 30 days before they vote on their budget.”

District 6 Councilman Terry Hansen was the lone dissenter opposing the disapproval of the budget.
