Council to focus on pending runoff

May 14, 2013

Big Spring City Council convenes at 5:30 p.m. today to call for a run-off election June 8 to decide the fate of the District 5 council seat.

Candidate Raul Benavides garnered the most votes in Saturday's election — 187 — while opponents J.D. Smith had 143 and Clint Collins tallied 93).

Despite a strong finish in the municipal election, Benavides' victory was short-lived as the did not account for 50 percent or more of the vote to avoid a run-off. According to city officials, current District 5 Councilman Craig Olson will continue to represent the district until the results of the run-off — slated for June 8 — are canvassed. Olson had announced earlier this year he would not seek a second term.

Also tonight, Mayor Tommy Duncan will give up his seat on the council to newly elected Larry McLellan, who won his bid for the mayoral seat Saturday.

McLellan defeated challenger Roger Rodman 1,074 votes to 505. Duncan had decided not to seek re-elecion.
City Secretary Peggy Walker is to administer the oath of office to McLellan this evening and the council is to hold a ceremony recognizing the accomplishments of outgoing council members.
