Council to sign off on election for term limits

Big Spring voters will get the chance to vote on term limits for elected city officials in the May municipal elections, as the city council is expected to certify the results of a recent petition to force the change to the city charter to the polls.

The Big Spring City Council will hold a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. today to certify the results and call for the election, which will be held May 14.

According to City Finance Director Peggy Walker, the petition needed enough signatures to equal or exceed 5 percent of the total number of registered voters in Big Spring to force the matter to the voters.

“The petition contained 740 names, of which we were able to verify 583 as valid,” Walker said. “They needed 5 percent of the total number of registered, unsuspended voters in the city, which came up to 511, so the matter will be on the ballot in May.”
