County nixes exemption

Howard County commissioners voted unanimously to disapprove the exemption of “goods in transit” from local taxation during Monday's meeting, following a swift — and quiet — public hearing on the matter.

Following a public hearing that drew no comments from area residents, commissioner gave the go-ahead to nix the exemption, a move County Judge Mark Barr said will have very little effect on tax revenue in the Crossroads area.

“This taxing option has very little effect on Howard County,” Barr said. “In a place like Plainview, where they have a Wal-Mart distribution center, this option can have a very pronounced effect. However, we don't have anything like that here, so its really not an issue for us.”
