Department of Public Safety officials have released the names of a Big Spring man and woman killed Monday afternoon when the pickup in which they were traveling struck an 18-wheel tractor trailer near the 181 mile marker of Interstate Highway 20.
Eugenio Martinez Arellano, 50, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at 5:20 p.m. by Howard County Justice of the Peace Kathryn Wiseman, according to accident records filed with the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Maria Rodriguez Lownes, 61, a passenger in the 2001 Chevrolet S-10 pickup driven by Arellano, was also killed, according to DPS officials. Lownes was pronounced dead at the Scenic Mountain Medical Center emergency room at r at 5:31 p.m. by a doctor at the hospital.
Also injured in the traffic accident was Enriquez Hernandez Jr. of San Elizario, Texas, who was behind the wheel of a 2006 Kenworth tractor trailer traveling west at the time of the accident. The extent of Hernandez's injuries are unknown at this time, according to DPS officials.
The accident was reported at 4:39 p.m., according to law enforcement officials, seven-tenths of a mile west of the 182 mile marker on Interstate Highway 20.
According to officials with the DPS regional communications office in Midland, Texas, the accident occurred when Arellano's pickup struck a piece of 12-inch pipe, sending the vehicle over the median and into the westbound lane.
The pickup hit the Kenworth tractor-trailer head-on, according to the report.
Officials with DPS said it's unclear if the piece of pipe that caused the accident was lying in the roadway or was dropped from another vehicle moments before the accident.
Funeral arrangements for both Arellano and Lownes are being handled by Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
