Dr. James Warren Tipton

August 13, 2012

Dr. James Warren Tipton “Tony”, 79, passed away at his home Saturday morning, Aug. 11, 2012. He was born April 4, 1933, in Jackson, Tenn. to James and Hilda Patrick Tipton.

He was raised in Milan, Tenn. and graduated from high school at Columbia Military Academy in Columbia, Tenn. in 1951. He received his pre-med education from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Tony attended medical school at the University of Tennessee-Memphis and graduated in 1956. He interned at Richland County Hospital in Columbia, S.C. and did his residency in otolaryngology at Kennedy Veterans Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Tony married Sara Jane Malone of Clarksville, Tenn. Jan. 29, 1955 while in medical school. He and his family moved to Big Spring, Texas in January 1961, where he began his practice as an ear, nose, and throat doctor for Malone-Hogan Hospital and remained for the next 26 years. In 1987 he was hired as a physician at the Big Spring State Hospital where he later retired in 1996.

Tony had an infinite knowledge of history and a precise memory for anything he read. He did not plunge into social gatherings readily, but he was always enthusiastic about sharing an engaging story, an interesting historical fact or a small token of wisdom with whoever would lend an ear.

He had an abiding love for his wife of 57 years and his family. He passed away with a book in his hands.

He is survived by his wife, Sara Tipton of Big Spring, Texas; a daughter, Diane Veirs of Santa Fe, N.M.; one brother, Dr. King Tipton of Fort Myers, Fla.; one sister, Barbara Baker of Milan, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Crystal Veirs of Santa Fe, N.M., Ty Tipton of Midland, Texas, Jessica Williams of Big Spring, Texas, Trey Tipton of Big Spring, Texas, and John Veirs of Santa Fe, N.M.; and two great grandchildren, Ana Marie Williams of Big Spring, Texas and Zoey Tipton of Big Spring, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Hilda Tipton of Milan, Tenn.; and two sons, James Warren Tipton, Jr. “Jimmy” and Steven M. Tipton, both of Big Spring, Texas.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012 at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park with the Rev. Tom Koger officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13, 2012, at the funeral home.
