Drill helps ensure safety prepardness at refinery

October 25, 2013

The Big Spring Refinery held its annual emergency response drill Thursday morning which involved a plethora of state, local and national agencies.

“It’s an annual emergency response drill we have as part of our obligations with the Texas Railroad Commission since we have underground storage wells,” said Randy Hillman, general manager of logistics at Alon USA Big Spring Refinery and a member of the incident command team. “It’s a great way for us, Alon and for the community to be involved and train in the event of a real emergency,”

Beginning at 10 a.m., a vapor release warning sent the refinery’s firefighting team — the Red Hats — plus the Big Spring Fire Department and the Howard County Volunteer Fire Department to the company’s fire grounds to tackle a simulated fire. The drill ended at noon.
