E. Byron Range Jr., DVM, 91, of Big Spring, died Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, at Parkview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. A Remembrance Gathering of family and friends will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church in Garrett Hall.

Dr. Range was born April 22, 1921 in Dallas, Texas to Opal (Jett) and Edgar Byron Range, Sr.. He grew up in Dallas and attended Buckner Home Academy. He served in the United States Army Air Corps in World War II from March 14, 1942 until his discharge in October 1946. He married Jean Taylor on March 17, 1947 (St. Patrick’s Day). He attended Texas Technological School in Lubbock and then attended Texas A&M Veterinary College. He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1951 and practiced for more than 45 years. He was a Director/Professor for 10 years in colleges in Texas and Oklahoma. He was self-employed, specializing in mostly large animals.

Dr. Range was very active in the Lions, Kiwanis, BSA, school boards and Veterinary Medical Associations (local, regional, state and national). He served in all areas including president, life member or emeritus. He was awarded BSA Silver Beaver (the highest BSA Council Award) and mainly by virtue of having all five sons attain highest Eagle Scout awards. He enjoyed training dogs and quarter horses, TSRA State Garand firearm marksmanship, golf, wood and shop working and laughing. He was a man of great faith.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Range of Big Spring; three sons, Paul Byron Range of Floresville, Stephen Roy Range of Woodway and Daniel Thomas Range of Waxahachie; and one daughter, Diane Range Murphy of Big Spring.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; two sons, Major David Newton Range and Captain Philip Robert Range; and one grandson, Ben Range.
