Early college gets a look by ISD board

Big Spring Independent School District board members were told Thursday the effort to achieve the designation of becoming an early college high school is well on its way.

One of the main issues discussed Thursday night was in regards to Big Spring ISD possibly being designated as an early college high school. If the school receives the designation, courses following the program will begin next semester.

The AVID (advancement via individual determination) program — a readiness system aimed at increasing school-wide learning and performance — will also be added to the curriculum in order to better prepare BSISD students for a college career.

“If we get approved for the designation, classes will start next year with this year’s eighth grade class. We aren’t going to wait,” Steven Saldivar, superintendent, said.
