In an effort to make up for an anticipated budget shortfall, Big Spring public school officials are offering personnel a de facto early resignation bonus.
Any Big Spring Independent School District employee who announces his or her resignation prior to March 1 will receive a one-time payment of $1,000, BSISD Chief Financial Officer Sandra Waggoner said.
This action is being taken to help the district get a head start on dealing with an anticipated drop in state aid. Texas legislators are expected to drastically cut revenue to school districts as a result of a budget shortfall estimated at almost $20 billion.
“We're doing this simply for budgetary reasons,” Waggoner said. “We'll look at the vacancies that result (from the early resignations) at that particular point and see if they need to be filled.”
