Early voting dates set for council runoff

Early voting has been set in the June 8 runoff election to decide whether Raul Benavides or J.D. Smith will take over the District 5 seat on the Big Spring City Council.

Early voting will begin Tuesday and end a week later with all balloting to take place at the Howard County Courthouse Elections Office. Voting will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. next Tuesday and on Tuesday, June 4. All other days, hours will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On election day, voting will be held at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum East Room from7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
Benavides and Smith fell into the runoff after neither could win 50 percent of the vote in the May 11 council election.

Benavides received 187 ballots for 44.21 percent of the vote. Smith tallied 143 for 33.81 percent and a third candidate, Clint Collins, had 93 ballots for 21.99 percent.
