Election time is drawing near for the Big Spring Independent School District.
During the upcoming board of trustees meeting, set for Thursday in the high school board room at 5:15 p.m., one of the action items on the agenda is the school board trustee election order and appointments for the May 12 election.
Three positions on the board are up for election, District 2, represented by Maria Padilla, District 3, held by Ken McIntosh, and District 4, held by Tony Kennedy.
Last month, trustees also brought up a short discussion on a resolution which would include the renaming of the Athletic Training Center (ATC). This month, the board will consider and is expected to take action on a resolution to rename the facility in honor of Dorothy Garrett.
Another topic discussed last month that will be addressed again Thursday is consideration of approving Big Spring ISD hazardous bus areas.
Hazardous areas are defined as areas which could pose dangerous for a student to cross in order to get to school. In a recent audit, a few things were pointed out in the transportation department in regards to Texas Education Agency guidelines.
“Big Spring has no areas marked as hazardous which is very unusual,” said Wayland Pierce, director of transportation and maintenance at BSISD.
Designation of hazardous areas in the community, according to Pierce, are part of the TEA funding criteria. Up to an additional 10 percent can be received by a school district, depending on the number of eligible bus riders that reside in designated hazardous areas.
In addition, the board will receive several reports regarding BSISD bus routes, installation of turf, cooperative fees paid by BSISD and Early College High School. A standardized dress code will also be discussed.
Other items on the agenda include:
• Executive session 551.072 real property
• Tour of Goliad campus
• Approval of board minutes from the Jan. 12 and Jan. 19 meeting
• Receipt of financial reports
All school board meetings are open to the public. The high school board room is located at 707 11th Place.
