Elizar Cantu, 68, of Ackerly died Monday, Jan. 9, 2012, at his residence. Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Myers & Smith Chapel with Chaplain Larry Hood officiating. Burial will be at the Fairview Cemetery in Ackerly.

He was born Dec. 30, 1943, in Karnes County, Texas, to Elvira and Domingo Cantu. As a young man he worked on the King Ranch. He came to Ackerly in 1970 from South Texas. He farmed in Ackerly until 2006, having worked for Darrell Bearden for 33 years. He also ranched in Dawson County. He was a Catholic. He married Dolores Garza on Nov. 17, 1971, in Lamesa.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores Cantu of Ackerly; one daughter, Robin Molina and husband Toby of Ackerly; one son, David Renteria of Ackerly; one granddaughter; mother, Elvira Cantu of Big Spring; five brothers, Rudy Cantu and wife Mary of Charco, Enrique Cantu and wife Yolanda of Rowlett, Silberio Cantu and wife Olga of Roanoke, Domingo Cantu Jr. and wife Macaria and Jesse Cantu and wife Sylvia, all of Big Spring; two sisters, Irene Perez and husband Jose of Goliad and Sandra Hensley and husband Andy of Ackerly; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Domingo Cantu Sr.
