Empty Bowls fund raiser Thursday

November 16, 2011

Empty Bowls —Five Golden Bowls — is right around the corner, but there is still time to purchase a ticket.

Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at First Christian Church — located at 911 Goliad — 150 people will have the opportunity to not only support the United Way of Big Spring and Howard County, but also to enjoy homemade soups and take home a one-of-a-kind bowl.

“This is a great way for the community to show their support for the United Way and at the same time it draws attention to a problem that exists all over the world,” executive director Sandy Stewart said.

The fifth annual event is the result of an idea presented by the Rev. Kenneth McIntosh in 2006 and the support of H-E-B. The main goal behind Empty Bowls is to help raise money to eliminate hunger through the use of local artistic talents.

“The United Way helps several agencies who offer assistance to those who are in need of food and because of that the event fits right into what the United Way is striving to do,” Stewart said.

Those attending the event can choose from seven different soups as well as 150 bowls. Each person attending will be able to take their chosen bowl home as a reminder that empty bowls always exist in the world.

For those still wanting to purchase a ticket, tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the United Way office, located at 215 W. Third.

Empty Bowls will serve as the final event for the 2012 campaign, which will wrap up Friday. The goal for this year was set at $275,000. At this point, the campaign has received a little more than 60 percent of its goal. Promised monies are still coming in at this point and final numbers won't be available until after the end of the campaign.
