EMS excavates man from cab following wreck

July 6, 2011

A man was airlifted from the scene of a one-vehicle rollover Tuesday morning on N. McGregor Road approximately one mile from Interstate Highway 20 after emergency responders spent nearly an hour trying to free him from the wreckage.

The victim — whose identity was not released at the scene — was driving a tractor trailer owned by Britt Trucking on N. McGregor Road when the truck and flatbed trailed left the roadway, rolling onto the driver side and partially on the roof.

Emergency responders at the scene said the man was conscious and alert while firefighters attempted to remove him. However, initial attempts were unsuccessful, forcing emergency officials to bring in a crane to lift the body of the tractor.

With some of the pressure off the cab of the truck, emergency responders with the Big Spring Fire Department and EMS were able to pull the driver free of the wreckage.

According to emergency officials, the driver's condition was stabilized before he was evacuated by helicopter to a medical facility.

The accident was investigated by the Texas Department of Public Safety. The cause of the wreck is unknown at this time.

Did they dig him out — excavate? or did they finally get him out of the cab — extricate?
