Ethel Mary Dunn Tarbet, a long-time resident of Dawson County and Lamesa, went to her eternal rest March 17, 2012, at the age of 101 years. Ethel was born Nov. 11, 1910, in Hamilton County, near the Leon River, to Eric V. Dunn and Jackie Alice Wright Dunn. She was the eldest of five children. The family moved from the Hico area to Dawson County in 1923. The family traveled 300 miles in two weeks by covered wagon, with Ethel, almost 13 years old, driving one of the two wagons.
Ethel met Price Tarbet while attending Mount Olive School. They were married Dec. 20, 1928, and farmed in various areas of Dawson and Martin counties, including Hancock, Sparenberg and Ackerly. Price passed away on Dec. 1, 1969. Ethel was a good farmer’s wife, helping in the fields when necessary, growing and canning fruits and vegetables and keeping their seven children fed and clothed, sometimes when it seemed impossible during times of poor harvest and the Great Depression. She often said, “The impossible just takes a little longer.”
After her husband died, Ethel moved to Lamesa where she worked as a caregiver. She was active in the Church of Christ and spent a lot of time baking cookies and chocolate pies for the sick and elderly members.
Ethel was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years; her parents; two brothers, Fred Dunn and E.V. Dunn Jr.; one sister, Gladys Kidd; and a daughter-in-law, Faye Tarbet.
She is survived by her sister, Jackie Nell Proffitt and husband Jasper of Cedar Park, Texas; five sons, Joe Tarbet and wife Jerry of Lubbock, Texas; Don Tarbet and wife Jewel of Denison, Texas; Bob Tarbet and wife Sharon of Big Spring, Texas; Lynn Tarbet and wife Rita of Artesia, N.M.; and Sam Tarbet and wife Linda of Marble Falls, Texas; two daughters, Nelda Lampe of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Ruth Bearden and husband Layne of Hutto, Texas. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Family visitation will be Monday, March 19, 2012, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Branon Funeral Home, 403 North Austin, Lamesa.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the Lamesa Church of Christ with Mark Hackett officiating. She will be laid to rest at Lamesa Memorial Park beside her husband.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff of Youngblood Elder Care and Interim Hospice Care for their compassion and care of our mother during the past few months.
