Festival of Lights worth another visit

December 22, 2010

Most Christmases are anything but boring, but if you find yourself looking for an extra special treat one evening this weekend, then head over to Comanche Trail Park and the Festival of Lights. What a way to top off Christmas, huh?

In fact, the Festival of Lights will be on display through Friday of next week, and yes, that includes Christmas Eve, Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Brave volunteers will be there to greet you from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. each evening. Donations are accepted, but there is no charge to view the individual displays which include almost a million lights.

The best way to enter the park is at the Whipkey Drive entrance off Highway 87. Just look for the gateway of poinsettias. From there, follow the scenes and giant postcards through the park and the circle drive at the spring, then exit near Kids Zone. Along the way you’ll see dozens of traditional and not-so-traditional Christmas scenes.

And remember, you can park near the Dora Roberts Community Center and walk through the park, crossing over lighted bridges and getting a unique view of the displays.

What's more, there's now a very unique gift shop available for festival visitors.

Already, the Festival of Lights has drawn many out of town visitors. Past “festivals” — this is the event’s 14th year — have attracted visitors from most of the 50 states and dozens countries. Festival organizers are expecting to again top the 20,000-mark in attendance before turning out the lights shortly after 10 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.

So, make plans this weekend to pile the family in the car and head out to the Festival of Lights. It’s well worth the trip and just one more reason Big Spring is a great place to be during the holidays.
