Forsan baseball, Coahoma softball teams make playoffs

April 26, 2011

COLORADO CITY — New year, new classification, same postseason hopes for the Forsan Buffaloes.

The Buffaloes clinched a spot in the Class 2A state high school baseball playoffs with a 12-5 victory over Colorado City Monday afternoon.

Forsan came into the game needing a win to hold off Coahoma for the final District 3-2A playoff spot. A loss to C-City would have dropped the Buffs into a tie with Coahoma and forced a one-game playoff between the teams.

Slaton and Lubbock Roosevelt ended the season tied for first in District 3-2A and will face each other in an extra game to determine seeding.

Despite the lop-sided final score Monday, it wasn't until the Buffaloes pushed across six runs in the sixth inning that they finally gained full control of the contest.

“(Colorado City) has struggled some this season, but they've played everyone close and we knew going in this would be a tough game,” Forsan Head Coach Jason Phillips said. “So when we had that big inning, I felt by blood pressure finally dropping back to normal levels.”

Zane Herrin was 5-for-5 at the plate with three RBI, while Patrick Robles and Trevor Burchett each had two hits and Foster Burchett drove in three runs. Pitcher Payton Parker took the win for Forsan.

The Buffs will face Tornillo in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs at a place and date to be determined.

Despite moving up in classification this year, Phillips was proud of his team for earning a third straight trip to the postseason.

“It was definitely tougher this year,” Phillips said. “Every team in this district could play. There wasn't one day when you could take the night off … They had to fight and compete every single day, and they definitely met the challenge.”

Bulldogettes earn
playoffs spot
SNYDER — It took an extra game, but the Coahoma Bulldogettes earned themselves another trip to the state high school softball playoffs.

The Bulldogettes, who have made the playoffs every year of the program's existence, had to struggle a bit to keep that streak going, but punched another ticket for the postseason by downing Post, 10-0, in an extra District 3-2A game Monday in Snyder.

The teams had ended the regular season tied with identical 7-5 district records, which forced Monday's extra game.

The Bulldogettes cranked out 12 hits against Post pitcher Chelsi Hair, three of which went for extra bases. Jo Anna Gonzales had a home run, while Jennifer Castilaw and Savannah Neff each had a double.

“We hit the ball pretty well,” Coahoma Coach Tracy Tadlock said. “We had contributions from everybody, up and down the lineup. Everybody had at least one hit except one girl, and she walked three times.”

Starting pitcher Kyla Clanton earned the complete-game victory for Coahoma, allowing three hits while strking out five and walking two.
Youth and injuries forced Coahoma into an unaccustomed fight to earn a playoff spot this season.

“We had three girls lost for the season with (knee injuries) and another girl had a shoulder injury which limited her to just running the bases for us,” Tadlock said. “I am really proud of the way they came through at the end of the season. I think we're playing better right now than we have all season. We're peaking at the right time, which is definitely what you want.”

The Bulldogettes will face Kermit in the first round of the Class 2A softball playoffs at a site and time to be determined.
