In a close, wind-blown game Friday night, the Forsan Buffaloes improved their record to 5-1 (2-0 in district) by defeating the Anson Tigers 28-20.
Forsan's head coach, Jason Phillips hit the nail on the head earlier this week when he said Anson was the best 0-6 team around, warning his players not to overlook the Tigers. His words would prove prophetic as Anson matched Forsan in just about every offensive category during this district match-up.
“We knew they would be better than their record indicated,” Coach Phillips said. “They got after us pretty hard in this one.”
Brendan Roman and Foster Burchett each scored twice for the Buffaloes and Ty Johnson pulled a heavy load, rushing for 149 yards on 17 carries.
Forsan lit up the scoreboard first when Burchett punched one in from a yard out, just three minutes into the game. The Buffaloes would hold a 6-0 lead until the 10:10 mark of the second quarter when Anson finally answered. The extra point out them ahead of Forsan 7-6.
Then it was Roman's turn, breaking through from five yards away. Burchett's pass to Patrick Robles would put the Buffaloes up 14-7. They would never surrender the lead again, as Burchett scored again with a minute left in the half.
Roman would get his second touchdown of the night in the fourth quarter, scampering from four yards out to seal the fate of the Tigers.
“We weren't quite as sharp as we were the last two weeks,” Coach Phillips said. “But when we needed a drive, the boys stepped up and made it happen.”
The defense of the Buffaloes did a little stepping of their own Friday night, stopping Anson on six out of seven fourth down attempts.
“I have to say something about the defense,” Coach Phillips added. “They really played great when we needed them to. It wasn't out best game, but when we needed a big-time play, we got it, on both sides of the ball.”
Burchett was 4-8 in the air for 78 yards, while rushing for 75on 17 carries. Dalton Doss led the Forsan receivers with 36 yards on a night when the ball would not go where it was supposed to go.
The Buffaloes' next outing will be a clash of two area teams, both undefeated in district play, as Forsan hosts Coahoma Friday night.View more articles in:
