Forsan school trustees eye facilities study

May 12, 2012

FORSAN — Forsan Independent School District trustees will likely commission a facilities study when they hold their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the administration wing board room.

Trustees are expected to approve the hiring of Mike Brooks from the Texas Association of School Boards to conduct the study, which will be used to determine what, if any, renovations are needed to bring FISD campuses up to standard.

“We've got a variety of issues we're dealing with,” FISD Superintendent Randy Johnson said. “And a lot of those maintenance issues and concerns are at Elbow (Elementary).”

Elbow was constructed in 1930 and has had several additions and maintenance upgrades since then. Still, Johnson said, more work may be needed.

“We've got septic issues, not just at Elbow but at both campuses,” Johnson said. “Plus, we have a lack of electrical outlets and capacity. We were able to upgrade some areas during the last bond (in 2004), but other areas remain under-serviced.”

Brooks is expected to begin his study before the school year ends, but there is no timeline set for its completion.

“Honestly, I don't know how long this process will take,” Johnson said of the facility study. “Once we get the report back, the board will study it and we'll see if the issues are something we can resolve under the normal budget, or if we need to consider other solutions.”

Also Monday, trustees will consider the teacher salary schedule for the 2012-2013 school year. Johnson said he will recommend that teachers receive their normal “step” raises.

'It's getting tougher and tougher each year, considering this economy, but with the oil boom, we're concerned about losing some of our teachers to the oilfield,” Johnson said.

Also, trustees will consider:

• Purchase of a small plot of land immediately east of the high school field house.
• Personnel matters.
• Revenue, expenditure, investment and enrollment reports.
