Forsan wins battle of Buffaloes at homecoming

September 15, 2012

Trevor Burchett carries the ball for Forsan as Trevor Wiliams blocks during its 28-7 win over rival Stanton on Friday at Forsan's homecoming. The Buffs are now 3-0 on the season.

FORSAN — In the battle of the Crossroads Buffaloes, Forsan reigned supreme. The win also marks the first 3-0 start by the Forsan Buffs since 1998.

Keying Forsan's 28-7 victory was a staunch defense and a running game which improved since last week's flat, 14-0 victory over Coleman.

“We ran the ball a lot more consistently this week,” Forsan Head Coach Jason Phillips said. “We started finding the holes and the offensive line was locking up well.”

Senior running back Brendan Roman ran for two touchdowns — one in the first quarter, one in the third — and quarterback Marcus Cervantes completed two of six attempted passes for 23 yards, including a 13-yard pass to TE Kade Fanning for a touchdown. Cervantes also scored on a running play in the first quarter.

Stanton scored its lone touchdown when Tim Anderson ran one into the end zone in the first quarter.

A combined nine turnovers were committed during the affair — five by Stanton, four by Forsan — but overall, Phillips thought his squad made the proper adjustments he found necessary after last week's somewhat anemic offense.

“Our defense played great all night, it was one of our better defensive performances,” Phillips added. “That's what we needed to do — attack the line of scrimmage and make the stops when we need to. They kept us in the ball game.”

Next Friday, Forsan hopes to extend its winning streak as they travel to Tuscola to take on the winless Jim Ned Indians at 7:30p.m.

“Jim Ned likes to throw the football from the spread,” Phillips said. “We have had eight picks in three games.”

Stanton will host McCamey at 7:30 p.m. Stanton Head Coach John Peterson was unavailable for comment at press time.
