Friday is deadline to enter Community Christmas Parade

November 15, 2012

Remember those tales mom and dad use to read to you at bedtime? It's time to recreate them for the Big Spring Herald Community Christmas Parade, themed “A Storybook Christmas.”
The parade is Saturday, Dec. 1, but the deadline to enter and be eligible for prizes is Friday — as in tomorrow.
Entries will be judged in the following categories: Individual or family; civic group, church or school; commercial; industrial; and mounted.
The entry judged Best of Show (for best interpretation of the parade theme) will be awarded $100. The Publisher's Award will bestow $75 for the entry that exhibits the best use of lighting. And the Grand Marshal's Award and $50 will be given to the entry with best costuming.
Entry forms are available at the Herald office and in most issues of the newspaper.
Keep in mind, you don't have to have an entry ready by Friday; you just need to let the Herald know you plan to participate and in what category. This is done early so the parade runs smoothly. It takes a dozen or more Herald and community volunteers to put the parade together, handle the judging, etc.
The parade, which first wound its way down Gregg Street in 1986, will again be a lighted parade.
Plans call for the route to begin lining up on side streets as it has traditionally done. The procession will begin at the intersection of 24th and Gregg Streets, proceed north on Gregg to Eighth Street, turn east one block before turning north past the Herald building (where the judges will be) and proceeding to Heart of the City Park on Scurry Street.
The parade is to begin at 5:30 p.m.
Dathan Jones, executive director of the Big Spring YMCA, will serve as parade grand marshal.
